Volume 37, Issue 3
January 2014
Letter from the Artistic Director

Dear Friend of the Rep,

Happy New Year! 2014 is shaping up to be a great year for The Rep-Toledo's Community Theatre.

I begin this year by thanking all those who contributed to the solid foundation of The Rep, by donating to our Floor Fund and participating in The Feast of Christmas Present fundraiser and Scrooge's Favorite Things raffle. Thanks to you, we begin the year on firm footing-and a new stage floor! Thank you.

That new floor will debut with our very first production of 2014,  Noises Off, our second-most-requested-play-ever. Written by English playwright Michael Frayn in 1982, the play-within-a-play reveals the zany desperation of a star-crossed repertory company as they attempt to revive their careers-and settle their backstage rivalries-with the truly wretched sex-farce "Nothing On."

Needless to say, Noises Off is a comedy and the audience won't be the only ones who are hysterical in the theatre. Frayn was inspired to write the show after watching from the wings a performance of his play The Two of Us with Lynn Redgrave (which actually is quite good).  He said, "It was funnier from behind than in front..."

Co-Directed by Carol Ann Erford and Wes Skinner, Noises Off opens January 17th and will run for two weekends through January 26th. Make your reservations now, because this show will be a sell-out!

Coming up in February, you can help us celebrate Valentine's Day with Love Letters on February 14th, 15th and 16th at the Tenth Street Theatre.

And what better way can there be to celebrate a new year than by getting the next generation involved in the magic of theatre? Our weekly Rep Ed classes begin Saturday, January 11th and run through March 1st. The 9a.m. to Noon classes at our Tenth Street Theatre teach singing, dancing and acting, as well as stage craft and etiquette. At the end of each semester the students perform a showcase of talent, highlighting their new skills. Rep Ed classes build confidence and character in our students; I am proud to say that I will be one of the many theatre professionals who will have the chance to present a master class to this semester of The Rep's future stars. The theme for this semester is "Space Oddities," classes are for children ages 7 to 16.

To register, call 419-243-9277 (or you can register in-person on January 11th at 8:45a.m.). Registration is $100 per child for the 8-week session and includes a Rep Ed T-shirt.

Saying farewell to 2013, I am happy to report that ticket sales for A Christmas Carol were even higher than the year before; I offer to our cast, crew and The Valentine Theatre one last "God bless us, every one" to thank them for providing this much-loved gift to the community. Our 2013 - 2014 season of great performances continues with:

Noises Off, January 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26

Love Letters, February 14, 15, 16

The Glass Menagerie, April 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13

Moonglow, May 8, 9, 10, 11

Young Frankenstein the Musical, June 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, 22

(All these performances will take place on our historic Tenth Street Stage.)

On with the Show!

Noises Off

January 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26

Directed by Wes Skinner and Carol Ann Erford

Second only to Arsenic and Old Lace in our audience survey of requested shows, Noises Off is a play-within-a play. We begin with the final dress rehearsal of the dreadful sexcomedy, "Nothing On". Botched entrances, forgotten lines, missed cues, and uncooperative props, are all the sure-fire makings of an opening night flop. The second act gives us a glimpse of the same show from back stage, complete with all the behind the scenes antics patrons never get to enjoy, while the final act is the show nearing the end of its ten-week run, long after someone should have put a fork in it, and perhaps in some of the actors too!

Rep Ed Classes

Rep Ed classes begin again this Saturday, January 11th and will run through March 1st, and are from 9 a.m. to noon at the 10th Street Theatre.  The theme for this session is "Space Oddities". The classes are for children ages 7 to 16.

Singing, dancing and acting are all taught,as well as stage terms and etiquette.  At the end of the session the children will perform a showcase that will give them a chance to be on stage and show off what they have learned. They also receive a Rep Ed t-shirt.

Rep Ed classes help build confidence and character in children. The classes are wonderful for children who have never performed and for those that  have stage experience.

You can still register your child by calling Kathy at (419) 243-9277, or you can register in person on the 11th at 8:45 a.m.. Classes are $100 per child.
