Letter from the Artistic Director

Dear Friend of the Rep,

2014 is off to a shining start. Not only was January's Noises Off a roaring success - and our Valentine's Day weekend sparkled with the humor, drama and romance of Love Letters (Kudos to our talented casts, directors and crews!) - but we were also delighted to welcome a new member to The Rep's administrative staff, William J Priest, our new Technical Director.

Bill comes to us with an extensive background in theatre, both technical and on the stage (and a regular in A Christmas Carol); his energy, enthusiasm, creative talents and dedication to The Rep are already brightening our stage. Welcome, Bill!

And 2014 keeps getting better and better...in Toledo City Paper's annual readers' choice awards, The Rep has been voted Best of Toledo in the category of Local Theater Group, and to add a cherry on top, we were also runner-up in the category of Live Theater Venue. What a wonderful show of support by the community for The Toledo Rep - Toledo's Community Theatre!

Our next production of 2014 celebrates the talent of our youngest performers in the winter semester's "Space Oddities"-themed Rep Ed Showcase on Saturday, March 8th, at 12 noon on our Tenth Street Stage. Tickets are $3.

After that, Macbeth: A Kid's Cautionary Tale - Shakespeare's Scottish tragedy told within a lively and humorous story-theatre frame and presented by our Young Rep actors under the direction of Amy Spaulding-Heuring. Performances are 7 p.m. on March 14th & 15th, and at 2:30 p.m. on March 16th at our Tenth Street Stage. Tickets are $5 - $10.

Coming up later in the spring is Tennessee Williams' classic drama, The Glass Menagerie, opening April 4th at our Tenth Street Theatre.

Although it's hard to believe, spring really is on its way. So, if you know of any young theatre fans who are suffering from cabin fever, don't despair - the spring semester of our weekly Rep Ed program is right around the corner. Classes begin Saturday, March 22nd and run through May 17th (no class on April 19th). The 9 a.m. to 12 noon classes at our Tenth Street Theatre teach singing, dancing and acting, as well as stage craft and etiquette. At the end of each semester, the students perform a showcase of talent, highlighting their new skills. Rep Ed classes build confidence and character in our students - and they have fun! I truly enjoyed my time last semester teaching a stage craft class to so many of The Rep's future stars.

The theme for the Spring Rep Ed semester is "Living in the USA," classes are for children ages 7 to 16. To register, call 419-243-9277 (or you can register in-person on March 22nd at 8:45 a.m.). Registration is $100 per child for the 8-week session and includes a Rep Ed T-shirt.

On behalf of The Rep, I wish to extend a special thank you to the Elsie And Harry Baumker Charitable Foundation, Inc. for their generous support in making our Young Rep and Rep Ed programs possible. The Baumker Family Foundation is also a sponsor of our Thrifty Thespian Thursdays. Thanks to the generosity of the Baumker Family Foundation, the Rep Ed program is honored to present 10 need-based scholarships for their upcoming Rep Ed sessions. If you know of a deserving young person who would benefit from the classes, please contact the Rep's business manager, Kathy McGovern, at 419-243-9277 during regular business hours or by e-mail at kmcgovern@toledorep.org.
