Letter from the President

May 1, 2015

Dear Theatre Friends,

May is all about the kids! The weather warms, and kids look forward to playing outside. Softball and baseball seasons are in full swing. The Rep is in full swing with their Rep Ed and Young Rep programs.

The Rep Ed program has been part of the Rep's educational mission for a generation. We invite your children to be part of our summer programs. There are three summer sessions at the Center for Performing Arts at the University of Toledo scheduled for July and August. The first session will be held on July 20-24 with the theme "All That Jazz!" There will be some jazzy tunes and bit of Fosse. The second session will be held on July 27-31 with the theme "Beach Boys . . . . And Girls." The sounds of summer will be performed in the style of the "Beach Boys" with surfer songs for boys and girls! The last session will be held on August 10-14 with the theme "Animated Adventures," featuring favorite music from popular animated movies. All classes are geared for ages 7-16 and will meet Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All sessions will end with a performance showcase on Fridays for family and friends.  Be sure to call the Rep to make your reservation because classes fill up fast.

Do your kids want to be part of the action? If so, we have two Young Rep productions this summer with auditions coming up in May. Young actors ages 7-13 can audition on Saturday, May 9 starting at 1:00 p.m. for Dear Edwina, Junior. Edwina is a precocious tween who gives out advice on life and love from her garage with the kids from her neighborhood. This tuneful, fun-filled musical is entertaining for all ages. DEJ will be directed by Phillip Benson, music direction by Jill Reinstein, and choreography by Kayla Arnold.  We didn't forget the teens (ages 14-19)! They can audition on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m. for State Fair. With songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein, State Fair tells the story of the Frake Family as they find romance and adventure on the midway of the Iowa State Fair. Directed by Eileen Eddy, choreographed by Alana Eddy, and assisted by Jamie Naragon, the show promises to be a rousing evening of entertainment for the entire family.

Speaking of family, try some new theatre fun with entire brood in May. Local improvisational troupe, Gross Domestic Product, will be performing at the Rep on Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m.  in a special family-friendly show. Ticket prices are $5.00 for kids (13 and under) and $10.00 for adults. All proceeds will benefit the Rep. If you like Whose Line Is It Anyway?, you'll love GDP's exuberant performance. Who knows? Maybe they'll get you up on the stage with them!

The weather is warming up and fun for the entire family is here...AT THE REP!

Theatrically yours,

Amy Spaulding-Heuring
President, Toledo Repertoire Theatre

Travel to the South Pacific

The final production of the Rep's 2014-2015 main stage season is Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical tribute to "the greatest generation," South Pacific. Based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific, the story tells of the romance between Nellie Forbush, a nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, (played by Lindsey Denham) and Emile Debeque (played by Michael Searle), a sophisticated French plantation owner, all set against the backdrop of World War II.

South Pacific will have ten performances at the 10th Street stage on June  5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21 2015. Thursday through Saturday performances will be at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday performances will be at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $25.00 for adults, $23.00 for senior citizens, and $10.00 for students. The musical will be overseen by accomplished local musical director, James M. Norman. James has directed several of the Rep's most commercially and critically acclaimed musicals, The Full Monty, All Shook Up, Victor/Victoria, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The music director is Josh Glover. The choreographer is Brian Rodabaugh.
