The REPorter, volume 36 issue 1September 2012

Letter from the Artistic Director

As many welcome in the new school year, complete with the smell of new textbooks, the feel of crisp fresh school clothes, (uniforms in my son's case, Yippee!), and unattainable expectations, we here at The Toledo Repertoire Theatre welcome in a brand new season, our 80th, with a modern-day version of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

While preparations continue for what is no doubt going to be a Hamlet to remember I want to take a moment to acknowledge the production personnel that in my opinion seem to be working in such a professional, cooperative manner, absent of the amateur pettiness that can sometimes permeate a community theatre production. It starts with the show's director Matthew Gretzinger and his assistant Cynthia Stroud. Then there's Judson Lohman our technical director, David Nelms the set designer, Kari Kapszukiewicz (that's easy for you to say) on costume design, Derek Hansen designing sound, Brad Riker on props, Rick Clever doing lighting design, Qari Marshall with the fight choreography, and Juan Rodriguez and Christy Prager handling stage managing duties, kudos to you all! Please know your hard work and dedication are helping the Rep reset the standard as a kinder, gentler, more professional place for all to participate, and exceeding expectations.

Hamlet, a tragedy
Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Matthew Gretzinger

September 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, 2012
TWO WEEKS ONLY!

Shakespeare returns to The Rep stage with a vengeance! This classic tragedy tells the story of a young prince tormented by the recent death of his father, the king; the remarriage of his mother to his uncle, and a desire for retribution that may just be the undoing of them all!

Any actor who has ever survived a trainwreck onstage will tell you that Improvisation can save the show. It's one of the vital tools in an actor's toolbox (and it's FUN).

One day only: Saturday, Sept. 29th, 12:30-3:00 at the Rep. Register now and get the bargain price of $50. Class size is limited to 20 students, ages 10-19. Don't miss out. Call TODAY: 419-243-9277.

C. Sanders from Kentucky writes...Dear Wilma, Can we eat in the theater? I like to eat, especially fried chicken.

Dear C. The Toledo Repertoire Theatre isn't a Dinner Theatre where you're herded like cattle to an MSG-drenched salad bar, then served up a clump of unidentifiable meat with a shriveled up baked potato side, followed by show tunes performed by a bunch of folks in kilts singing about pots of gold and falling in love and such nonsense while you enjoy your mystery pudding-esque dessert. We suggest you patronize one of our local finer dining establishments prior to coming to the theatre. But thanks for writing.

Do you have a question for Wilma?  Please drop Wilma a line at Wilma@toledorep.org and perhaps your question will be published and answered in our next e-Newsletter.
