The Toledo Repertoire Theatre was founded in 1933, and is the second oldest cultural arts institution in Toledo, behind only the Toledo Museum of Art. The Rep is also the sixth oldest continually operating community theatre in Ohio. The company’s first production was A Doll’s House, which opened on June 8, 1933, at the Collingwood Presbyterian Church. In the summer of 1935, after its second successful season, The Rep moved into its current home at 16 Tenth Street, a building that had already been home to a church (Toledo Gospel Tabernacle), a Greek Social Club, and an African American Community Center in the brief time since it was erected in 1916. The first classes for children and adults were offered in 1937, and the theatre has been offering educational classes and productions ever since.
